blue eyes

songwriter + co-producer

i wrote this one while making burritos in my university dorm kitchen. i hummed the melody and immediately ran to my phone to record this voice memo.

i knew this song wasn’t for me to sing (as you can tell by my croaky attempts to falsetto the high notes), but i felt like there was something to it. i sat for quite a while and put together this verse and chorus, which i sent to my good friend Joel. production wise, i knew the song would need someone with a keen sense of groove and style, and so i asked he wanted to jump on the track. he liked it, and we began from there.

joel did his magic and flipped my sample into a fully fleshed out verse and chorus. I loved it so much i immediately recorded some vocals for him to work with. here’s one of these takes from mid-completion.

i wanted Justin as the singer from the start. we knew each other through Out of the Blue, and he’s the kind of guy who silences a room when he sings. I knew I wanted a powerful male vocalist on this song, and he was the perfect fit.
